Online seminar: Photonic System Integration and Programmable Photonics

Online seminar organized in cooperation with our partners PhotonicsNL.

Agenda:

Photonic System Integration using glass structuring technologies
Dr. Henning Schröder (Fraunhofer IZM)

Abstract

There is a clear tendency to hybridly integrate more and more opto-electronic and micro-optical components like optical fibers, laser diodes, modulators, isolators, beam-splitting components and micro lenses in also increasingly dense and complex assemblies. The webinar will discuss thin glass as a very promising base material for that kind of photonic packaging on interposer and board level including PIC integration and optical interconnection using silica fibers. Several applications will be focussed: Datacommunication, medical and sensing as well as quantum photonic packaging.

By the advent of very thin float glass production and the development of down draw processing with precisely controlled thicknesses of typically 150 µm  glass has become a planar substrate material for electronic and photonic packaging at wafer and panel level, with typical singulation into interposer structures for redistribution, shaping or pitch conversion of signal paths. Glass has convincing advantages in comparison with other materials used for this purpose, such as silicon and polymer materials, which have been used as interposer materials. Despite being very thin, panels as well as the machinery to handle and structure them are getting ever larger and more economical in size. Advances in thin glass based photonic assembly and packaging will be presented.

Thin glass can also be structured to facilitate in-plane optical waveguiding, e.g. by ion-exchange techniques. This way optical signal distribution can be embedded in panel size Electrical-Optical Circuit Boards (EOCB). The specific dielectric properties of glass provide a high integration potential by combining electrical and optical functionalities in one single substrate. The webinar will show the current status and recent results of Fraunhofer IZM focusing on panel integration with integrated optical waveguides and appropriate fiber interconnection techniques.

Programmable photonics
Dr. Oded Raz (TU Eindhoven)

Abstract

Photonic integrated circuits are incredibly potent and have and will find applications in many fields of engineering. In order to allow them to make the next jump in yield, performance and market penetration we need to introduce truly user programmable PICs. In the research done in the TU/e Dr. Raz and his collaborators from the faculties of Applied Physics and chemical engineering are uncovering new materials and concept for making the next generation of programmable PICs.
